Information Assurance

Information Assurance covers a range of information related legislation including information security, data protection, document and record management and freedom of information.

Information systems and the processing of data, both personal and non-personal, underpin the University's activities and are essential to its teaching, research and administrative functions. 

It is therefore essential that all members of the University play their part in safeguarding the availability, integrity, confidentiality and authenticity of the information they hold or access.

Personal Data

Data Protection Act

The University has a clear obligation to the individual about whom it holds data to process the information in a manner that is compliant with the provisions but also the spirit of the Data Protection Act 1998.

Freedom of Information Act

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 promotes greater openness and accountability across the public sector and gives a general right of access to all types of recorded information held by public authorities.

Information Security

The University is highly dependent on its systems and procedures, both manual and electronic, for the handling and processing of information that is required during its day to day activities.

Information is a key asset of the University and it is essential that it is protected to ensure against data breaches, failures of integrity, interruption to availability and failure to comply with legal requirements.

Information Classification and Handling

Classifying University information and data is an important part of Information Security.  It helps us to understand how sensitive the information is, who needs to access it and what level of protection its needed.
