What follows is a brief overview of responsive research grants (large and small) offered by the Research Councils and major UK Charities; information on EU grants will be added shortly:
Art & Humanities Research Council
Research Grants (Standard Route) - Value: £50,000-£1,000,000; Duration: up to 60 months; Deadline(s): open.
British Academy
Small Research Grants - Value: up to £10,000; Duration: up to 24 months; Deadline(s): 2 per annum
Biotechnology & Biological Science Research Council
Research Grants - Value: flexible; Duration: flexible; Deadline(s): 4 per annum
Economic & Social Research Council
Research Grants Scheme - Value: £350,000 to £1m; Duration: flexible; Deadline(s): Open
Leverhulme Trust
Research Project Grants - Value: up to £500,000; Duration: normally 24-36 months but up to 60 months is possible; Deadline(s): outline application in the first instance which has an open deadline, successful outline applicants will be invited to make a full application
Natural Environment Research Council
Standard Research Grants - Value: minimum of £65,000 fEC, maximum £0.8m; Duration: flexible; Deadline(s): 1 Jul, 1 Dec.
Large Research Grants- Value: £1·2m, 100% (fEC). The maximum funding level for large grant proposals is £3·7m (fEC).
Urgency Grants - for work that exploits unexpected and short-lived research opportunities, such as those offered by natural events like earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. The maximum funding that may be sought for an Urgency proposal is £65,000; this limit applies to the total (100%) full economic cost of the project, of which NERC will fund 80%.
Nuffield Foundation
Open Door Grants - funds projects outside the Foundation's special areas of interest but which must have a bearing on its wider charitable remit; Value: normally £5,000-£150,000; Duration: flexible; Deadline(s): 3 deadlines for outline applications (Nov, Mar, Jul), successful outline applicants will be invited to make a full application.
