Research Governance
Research Governance
Research Governance describes the processes and procedures, the policies and guidelines through which the University manages research from the project development stage through to the delivery, dissemination and exploitation of the research
Many research funders and research partners expect Universities to assure suitably high standards of research governance. Good research governance involves:
- proper planning and resourcing of activities
- securing the necessary authorisations for research, notably ethical approvals
- maintaining the highest standard of research conduct
- ensuring that research complies with relevant legislation such as the Data Protection Act, the Human Tissue Act and the Mental Capacity Act
- ensuring the effective management of data
- maintaining the safety of University researchers and third parties
- identifying possible routes for the exploitation of research
Much of this is merely a matter of codifying and building upon what is accepted good practice in particular research fields, and is routinely practiced by staff in the course of their research.
