Whole School and Content Area Teaching

The video below gives the viewpoint of an experienced teacher of EAL pupils. Acting, gestures, time humour, eye contact, notes being written in native language have worked for this teacher of Geography. Dealing with the language of the subject is a particular issue. This teacher uses parts of words (morphemes) to understand the whole. She also keeps dictionaries handy and teaches the specifics of exam question vocabulary. Some EAL pupils have to be taken back to the start on certain subjects as the cultural expectation of their native country are not the same as the UK. There is a value placed on the student. This teacher uses methods to demonstrate to non-EAL pupils the value of the native country. The culture is included in the lessons and pupils are deliberately taught about it in the classroom.
