Integrated Learning

Please click on the link here . This video is by Dame Maureen Brennan, a school with a high intake of EAL pupils. Dame Brennan cautions against the 'deficit model' which sees the introduction of EAL pupils as a problem. Instead, it is a quality. The issue of data use is considered. The pupils are assessed early and then high targets set. Interventions are crucial to success and it is the job of the school to overcome any barriers to learning. One advantage of an EAL pupil is that some are GCSE subjects and there is advice to make sure that this counts. Another message from the video is to individualise learning plan and targets. If targets are not met, then extra sessions are put in place after school. Technology is used to target pupils who may be vulnerable to underachieving. Photos of the pupils and colour-coded assessments are given to each teacher to increase the impetus to keep improving attainment.
