Information for DSA needs assessors
The Disability and Dyslexia Service offers confidential, one-to-one advice and guidance to students with disabilities, learning differences and medical conditions. Support can be offered throughout a student’s time at the university, from application through to the completion of the course.
The service can support with:
- Advisory visits to the university before an application is submitted
- Adjustments and support (including reasonable adjustments for lectures and exams and advice on applying for Disabled Students’ Allowance)
- Accommodation
- Advise on screening and diagnosis for specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia
- Liaison with academic staff regarding any support needs
- Signposting to other support services
Lecture Capture facilities for recording lectures are not available across the campus.
Extensions to assignment deadlines are not available. The university has a mitigating circumstances process and if a claim is successful then students are given 7-day extensions. Extensions to dissertation deadlines can also be applied for.
There are no adjustments for Spelling Punctuation and Grammar errors. Students are assessed on technical proficiency in English language in a way that links to the level and content of the course or module. Errors in English/spelling, punctuation and grammar which impede understanding of content will be marked appropriately.
No £200 contribution towards a laptop. There is an ‘Access to Learning Fund (Hardship)’ which is means tested and only available to current students. This is not specifically for the laptop contribution.
There are no site licences for assistive software in the university.
There are no specific Assistive Software applications that the university do not allow their students to use. However, they encourage students to reference any use of AI.
Students can self-declare a disability and receive classroom-based adjustments based on their self-declaration. Exam adjustments require supporting documents to be provided by the student.
