Case Study: Pete; Sports Studies BSc

Pete was in his first year of his Sports Studies degree. He was living in halls of residence and finding it difficult to adapt to living away from home and studying at degree level. He was friendly with the guys he played sports with but saw them as team mates and drinking buddies rather than friends he could approach if he had a problem. After a couple of months of feeling that he didn’t belong at university he decided to leave. After talking to an advisor in Registry Services and discussing his options Pete decided that rather than leave he would intercalate, that is, take some time out which would than give him the option of returning to university at a later date. His decision was based on the fact that he enjoyed his course and felt that it was the qualification he needed for his future career, but that maybe it wasn’t the right time for him to be at university. He decided to give himself 12 months and then think about returning. In the meantime he was going to try and find a job.
