Case Study: Belle; Computing BSc

During her second year Belle was involved in a car accident which left her with back and joint pain. The medication that she was prescribed for the pain made her very tired. She also experienced occasional dizziness and had problems with her short term memory and ability to concentrate for long periods. Prior to the accident Belle had been achieving excellent grades but since the accident her grades had gone from A’s to D’s and she failed one of her modules because she wasn’t able to complete the work by the deadline.Belle was disappointed with her grades and had concerns that her overall degree classification would be affected. As much as she enjoyed her course Belle wondered whether it was worth her continuing to fund and work towards a degree that wouldn’t reflect her true ability. After discussing her concerns with an Advisor in Registry Services, Belle decided that rather than leave she would reduce the number of modules that she was taking. This would allow her more time to complete her work. In addition, she also contacted the Disability and Dyslexia service to see whether they could offer her some support. With a reduction to her work load and with support from the Disability and Dyslexia Service, Belle was able to continue with her studies and achieve the grades that she knew she was capable of achieving. Although it would now take longer to complete her degree; Belle felt it was preferable to leaving.
