Setting up your support
Setting up your support
The University’s Disability and Dyslexia Service supports students in arranging reasonable adjustments for lectures, exams, assessments, during placements and when living in University accommodation.
Reasonable adjustments can be arranged for anyone that can provide appropriate evidence of a disability, including specific learning differences such as dyslexia, that meet the definition of a disability from the Equality Act, 2010.
We also can offer advice and support with making an application for Disabled Students’ Allowance if it is applicable for you.
How to discuss your needs and arrange support
Click on the steps below to learn more about how to access support and guidance.
-
You can email evidence of your disability or condition when you book your Disability Adviser appointment.
-
If you still need to get the evidence then it can be provided later, but no support can be implemented until we have a copy of the evidence.
-
Full details about what is appropriate to use as evidence can be found on our diagnosis and evidence page

The adviser with discuss your support needs and create a support plan which can take immediate effect if appropriate supporting evidence has already been provided.
-
If you are in University accommodation then reasonable adjustments can be arranged for your room e.g. installing a fridge for storing medication.

If you wish, a Disability Adviser can liaise with your Personal Academic Tutor or Course Leader about reasonable adjustments that need making during lectures and assessments.
-
Disabled Students’ Allowance, also known as DSA, is a grant that is issued to pay for support that aims to reduce the barriers experienced by a student because of a disability, including specific learning differences such as dyslexia.
-
DSA is funded by your local Student Finance agency e.g., Student Finance England.
-
DSA can take 10-14 weeks from application to support being in place, depending on the time of year you apply for it.
